This film is, of course, one of the most well known nuclear war movies ever made. It significantly changed US opinion about nuclear war and it’s not hyperbole to say it played a role in the end of the Cold War.

Some of the stray dogs living near Chernobyl have recently turned blue. This confused scientists for weeks, until they realized they had simply been rolling around in chemicals from a nearby set of portable toilets. 14/10 for all

This movie is basically a conspiracy theory. It is similar in tone and theme to classics like House of Stairs or Cube. It is different from most trapped in a metal tube nuke movies (normally the metal tube is a bunker in these kinds of movies but it is sometimes a plane like this).

And now for something completely different… the Atomic Cafe is a very fun mashup of archival footage, songs, educational shorts, etc. all about nuclear war from a US perspective. It is both hilarious and horrifying. I strongly recommend this one and it’s currently free on Tubi.

This is an explicitly Christian movie about nuclear war. IME most Christian nuke movies are about “the end times” (tm), this is refreshing in that it’s not. Like most religious movies it is extremely low budget, and wow can you feel how small that budget was.

Barefoot Gen is an anime film based on the experiences of Keiji Nakazawa after real life survivor of the Hiroshima bombing. It is the first not speculative movie I’m reviewing here. It is an excellent film and a decent introduction to nuclear war.
