||Still largely under construction. Will be posting intermittently.||
Nevertheless, some time after, she goes out of her way to understand him anyway, and he still can't make heads or tails of her actions.

She walks away, believing that the distance between them is in his best interest. He watches her go, confused as to why they're not closer to each other when he wants to understand her better.

So here she can see that Neuvillette can be emotionally intimate with just about anyone he chooses. This is an intimacy that she doesn't allow herself to have, paranoid that such level of intimacy would eventually unveil her secret.

Furina knows Neuvillette the best; she knows of his habits, she can read his intentions easily, and she knows how to rein him in. She trusts his judgments and always thinks the best of him, before and after 4.2.

Furina is someone so selfless that she believes that the world is better off without her—almost in a literal sense since the world's safety hinges on her suffering the most.

She also believes that Neuvillette is better off without her.

On the other hand, from Furina's perspective, Neuvillette had just told his greatest secret to someone he trusts and let into his emotional space—but is otherwise a practical stranger.

In her eyes, Neuvillette can easily hold his heart out to people, something even she can't do.

Furina stands in the rain—in his space of emotional vulnerability—aware of this secret. But despite calling out to her (in surprise, without her title), she looks away and puts even more distance between them by walking away.
March 8, 2025 at 3:39 AM
The visual storytelling here is great at conveying this: Neuvillette in the rain is where he is the most emotionally vulnerable, and he had just revealed his greatest secret to someone he trusts.

This wasn't just a display of frustration where Neuvillette couldn't complete his obligation to protect her because of her lack of cooperation. But also a display of helplessness where he understood that she was beginning to shut him out, despite being her most steadfast ally.
March 8, 2025 at 3:39 AM
So it's unusual for him not to know if she felt threatened and needed protection. This is also combined with the fact that this involved the Knave, who not only has political reasons to be resentful towards Furina and her authority, but who he deemed untrustworthy beforehand.
March 8, 2025 at 3:39 AM
This confused Neuvillette, especially because in (easy to miss) NPC dialogue, there are snippets that imply that Furina has been in danger before, and precautions have been put in place to protect her. Naturally, Neuvillette would have been the first to know such public information.
March 8, 2025 at 3:39 AM
But to Neuvillette, even though he suspected her of hiding secrets even from him, which he trusted she would reveal to him in due time, there was a possibility of her life being threatened and for the first time in their working together, she didn't want to tell him.

This scene is significant in that it told the start of NeuviFuri's fallout through simple presentation, now understood as a tragedy of misunderstandings that couldn't be easily communicated.

With a lot to unpack, I'll focus on what only the characters understood at the time.

Furina, therefore, can also be associated with clear skies; it is a sign of peace for her, that the worst has come to pass, that life may flourish again. To Neuvillette, clear skies are a necessity. To Furina, clear skies are a desire. Something she always dreamed of.

To Neuvillette, the rain is a blessing. To Furina, the rain is a curse that plagues her destiny.

That said, their reconciliation in regards to this is that neither of them want the rain to last forever. Excessive rain only causes destruction, something they both want to avoid.

But unfortunately for her, Neuvillette loves the rain. He prefers it; though the rain is a painful reminder of emotions that haunt him, he would rather bathe in the rain than not, because the rain brings him understanding, and therefore peace.
February 25, 2025 at 5:02 PM
Furina's destiny, in contrast to Neuvillette, is born in disaster, as her birthright would eventually lead her to the loss of all life for which she must mourn. For her, it can only rain in excess and clear skies are but a dream in the end.

Compare and contrast Furina's weather associations, namely floods, which bring destruction to crops as well as civilizations; things that Neuvillette by principle are meant to protect as a God of Life, and a god of rain and sun that give life to the land.

With his subsequent association with sunlight and sunny weather comes his association with daytime. One could argue that this might have to do with why he is heavily pneuma-aligned, despite being able to control both, as pneuma is the "light-aspected" Arkhe.
February 25, 2025 at 5:02 PM
To elaborate more on Neuvillette, a water dragon that can control the rain is more indicative of holding dominion over weather and the life it provides. Therefore, his association with the rainy weather goes hand in hand with sunny weather as well.
February 25, 2025 at 5:02 PM
Neuvifuri have much to do with weather. Neuvillette's association with the rain is obvious enough as well as Furina's association with floods, but for both him and Furina, there is much more than simple rain and floods.

If you really think about it, Neuvillette made such a small ladle that can barely fit a finger puppet of himself or two blueberries in it; with great finesse and tender care, he first ever arts and craft creation... the most miniature of ladles that really says "him."

It's funny how much bigger it is in-game than it is in real life, but there's also the fact that objects are simply bigger in size for visibility reasons and are not typically to scale.
February 24, 2025 at 4:08 PM
Not a real ship crumb, but I remember finding it so cute how, in the official merchandise reveal of Neuvillette's ladle, they included a marketing Easter egg of Furina's 4th anniversary art in the preview pictures—not just blueberries, but also (most of) the same color macarons in the background!

Neuvillette's position allows him to view all of the audience comfortably, and interestingly, Furina in her higher seat as well. He only has to look skyward and she'll be right there, looming over everyone else.
