These are object lessons for anyone who writes to how the normal and often ignored is a rich, continuous seam of poetic imagery. It’s also a brilliant way to connect with the world around you.

If you are a poet, follow Ian. You will learn a very great deal, and you will improve your work.
Early stroll. The sky has a flannel over its face. A blackbird’s alarm call rattles the morning. That upside down yogurt pot looks like an alien spacecraft. A bloke and I exchange raised thumbs. I blow my nose like the foghorn of a ship passing Girvan.

In the old days, good writers got famous for selling books.
Nowadays, bad writers sell books by being famous.
I can’t stop thinking about a rejection letter a friend had from a publisher for his manuscript which said, “I think I’d have really liked this, if you were more famous.”

An actual person, who is paid to read books, said that.

I went to a Woodturning demo last April, was mesmerised. Didn’t touch a piece of wood until October, but I’m well and truly hooked! #Woodturning
