Wishing a happy 172nd birthday to Bill Stearns today. A veteran of 5 pro seasons, Stearns is notable for owning one of the lowest career wars of all time at -8.6, plus being the first major leaguer to die serving in the military.

Happy 171st birthday today to former Major leaguer Oscar Walker. A 6 year pro, Oscar led the American Association in home runs in 1882 with 7. Best known for his baseball card looking like an ultrasound photo, Walker finished his career with 11 homers.

Today we remember Art Croft who passed away this day 141 years ago. Croft played parts of 3 seasons with the St Louis Red Stockings, the Brown Stockings, and the Indianapolis Blues. Croft finished his career with 16 extra base hits, a hard to achieve .205 OBP and no images on Google.

Bill Greif had an interesting short MLB career. Known for giving up lots of hits, walk, runs, homers, hit by pitches, striking out few and that hair, Greif compiled a 31-67 record and a 4.41 era over a career split as a starter and reliever.

The Only Nolan was a below average pitcher with an above average name. The 2nd ever Canadian to play in the majors, Nolan was blacklisted by the NL for confirmed dissipation and general insubordination. Upon his return in 1883, he continued to suck and was eventually released.

Bob Addy opened the floodgates in 1871, becoming the first Canadian to play in the majors. Addy was also the first player to slide in an organized game. In 2021, Addy was inducted into the Canadian baseball hall of fame! Unfortunately he wasn’t able to attend the ceremony.

17 year veteran, Granville Wilbur “Granny” Hamner was a key member of the 1950’s Whiz Kids Phillies squad which advanced to the world series. A 3 time all star, Granny is best remembered for leading the NL in at bats in 1949.

Jeff Samardzija had a ridiculous career at Notre Dame. 2 years a starter, Shark ripped off 2593 yards and 27 TDs. Both seasons he lead the independent conference in receiving yards, and was a top 5 receiver in the country in 05.

88 touchdowns. The NCAA record for career rushing TDs set by Navy QB Keenan Reynolds from 2012 to 2015. Reynolds threw for only 31 TDs in his career.
