Ooof, there's a lot more than this! Hoping I can follow up on some of the things I wasn't able to include in this piece. In the meantime, if you wanna learn more about some policy recs from experts and advocates have for the next mayor, you can read the full article documentedny.com/2025/10/24/n...

One way the city could do this is through a thorough audit of third-party entities that collect NYers' personal info including the contractors that work or have worked for the city, and ensure there are maximized privacy safeguards in place to protect that data

#2 I kept hearing from sources from different sectors about data privacy pertaining to personal/sensitive data belonging to city residents, especially immigrants. the city (under new mayor) needs to strengthen safeguards so that info doesn't fall to unauthorized parties w/o consent

A simple yet meaningful policy action would be for the new mayor to endorse amending the Chancellor's Regulations to include protocol on 🧊 which would prohibit school admin & staff from colluding w/ feds and require parental consent before any student info is handed to feds

Teachers & staff have been left to their own devices when it comes to security against 🧊. Some tried to organize KYR training but legal advocates found those trainings were either inadequate or were discouraged by school admin

#1 Most concerning was my convo about school safety including for immigrant students. At least five immigrant students enrolled in NYC's public school system have been detained by 🧊—I say "at least" bc the city/school district does not have a database keeping track of student disappearances

We can participate in democracy and be flawed while also having non-negotiable. No nazis. No racists. We aren’t abandoning trans people. Triple the minimum wage. Universal healthcare. Reproductive freedom. Etc etc etc. Stand for something! Appeasement accomplishes very little.
