Sent here for 6 months on an E1 visa in 1991. Been through the H1(B). Met an amazing American woman and married. Still took years to get Green Card and then Citizen. Had to pass a test which many US born could not. Voted.

Totally agree about looking around - I change my zoom background every week - my photos often taken while walking around

Domestic and imported prices indexed to 100 Jan 24. Both in a down trend till April(~2% and 4%) gone up since. Now 4% and 6% above trend line. Saw similar last time - domestic producers raise prices as they can (and inputs often tariffed)

Chart showing domestic and foreign produced goods indexed to Jan 2024. Clear trends down until "liberation" day with imported down ~4%, domestic ~2.5%. Both jumped after (imports more) and continuing to climb as it seems importers are passing more and more through. Imports gone from 96 back to 100, domestic 97.5 to 100. Note Cavallo (and others) documented imports went up after previous Trump tariffs on white goods and domestic producers took the opportunity to raise prices by almost as much. Deliberate choice to increase profit margin instead of taking market share (i.e. not increasing US production)

To sum this all up, first we must adjust r* relative to a baseline based on the factors I've described. A variety of models reviewed by Gianluca Benigno and others arrive at a median real estimate for r* of 1.3 percent, and a range of around 1 to 2 percent.26 Applying Okun's law with a natural unemployment rate of 4 percent, and PCE inflation at 2.6 percent, the standard Taylor rule approach implies the appropriate nominal fed funds rate prior to the forces considered today should be about 3.9 percent. A balanced approach suggests 3.6 percent. These are not all that far from where the FOMC has set interest rates! Including the shocks I've considered, I get a new real r* that is 1 to 1.2 percentage points lower, or near zero. That sounds low, but I think it's important to take these models seriously, not literally, and as I've said, I think these models sometimes don't do a great job incorporating policy changes of the type I've discussed at the frequency I need. Instead, I suspect existing backward-looking estimates are too high because they insufficiently account for recent changes to fiscal and border policies that are depressing r*. We can also look to financial markets. My preferred market-implied measure of r* is the five-year, five-year-forward rate on U.S. Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities. That's around 2.3 percent, meaning the new real r* would be 1.1 percent when applying new policy pressures.
