I think this is also at the core of anti-mask sentiment.
Former cop and novelist Joseph Wambaugh described the process of police corruption along these lines. As each cop yields to temptation, he becomes resentful to those who haven't. Good cops are hazed until they leave the department.

I’m so sorry for everyone’s losses and for the people who now have Long Covid. Please remember that the pandemic is ongoing and unfortunately not confined to the past. Covid killed ~5,000 Americans in September 2024, when it spread more than anytime in 2020.
