Society often rewards cruelty when it aligns with tribal outcomes or can be framed as deserved. That’s how people back policies they’d otherwise find appalling.

If you build a society that allows for or encourages cruelty under certain circumstances it becomes trivial to expand what circumstances allow this than if you outright condemn cruelty. I don't anticipate humanity achieving peace if cruelty is ever considered warranted.

Dismissing hard truths because they aren’t wrapped in language we prefer is luxury and sometimes a defense mechanism. Will’s not saying psychology exists in a vacuum. He’s saying it’s the final gate. If what’s in there is the thrill of domination, we need to be honest. Especially if we want change.
The tendency of left-wing thinkers to search for economic explanations for political phenomena has consistently pulled the entire left-of-center away from the obvious explanation for MAGA, which is that they find torture and domination psychologically rewarding, and are seeking that reward.
