No hate to George or Amber if they win, but Karen and Carlos have got my votes this year

And this is it, the end of the line. The Abukuma express line, anyway (the tracks continue on to Sendai, run as a JR line)

I actually made it! I definitely thought I might run out of time on a few occasions.

Higashi-funaoka! Last stop before Tsukinoki!
November 26, 2025 at 7:19 AM
Oka station
November 26, 2025 at 7:04 AM
Yokokura station! I'm going to do the rest is the stations staying on the train, so I can get back to Tokyo tonight.
November 26, 2025 at 7:02 AM
And now I'm in Kakuda! This place is way bigger. Gonna stop here for lunch
November 26, 2025 at 6:04 AM
And Minami-Kakuda done the same way
November 26, 2025 at 5:57 AM
Kita-marumori done on the hoof! An hour at each station is too long to wait unfortunately, but the drivers have been very understanding so far.
November 26, 2025 at 5:55 AM
this station has a some kind of little school area inside. I've found a plug socket, plus there are Japanese kids books so I'm practising my reading
November 26, 2025 at 5:23 AM
And here's Marumori. This is a slightly bigger town actually. It seems the town bird is the Japanese Bush Warbler (according to Wikipedia), and there are pictures of it all over.
November 26, 2025 at 5:10 AM
Anyway, did a speedrun of the next two stations. Here's Abukuma itself!

I'm actually stupid for missing this one though. There are Google reviews for it that say you can see cats here. Maybe I'll have time on the way back?
November 26, 2025 at 5:01 AM
I've been sitting at this station for almost an hour and just noticed this incredible spider. I'm not usually scared of them but damn if I'd found this on me there would be screams.
November 26, 2025 at 4:55 AM
Kabuto station. We're really getting out into the sticks now, there isn't even a vending machine here

On the plus side, the scenery is getting even more incredible. This is the Abukuma river, presumably what the line is named after
November 26, 2025 at 3:58 AM
Next stop, Tomino. It's a terminal for this sub-section of the line, but oddly has much less infrastructure than the last two stations.
November 26, 2025 at 3:05 AM
I did not quite have time to go see Kibōnomorikōen (Forest of Hope Park, I think) itself though, but the sign had big promises
November 26, 2025 at 2:52 AM
Another delightful little station, Yanagawa-kibōnomorikōenmae.
November 26, 2025 at 2:47 AM
This is a lovely station actually, there are multiple statues around, and some kind of memorial to the brave souls who... spent 3.8 billion yen on making the area nice.

That was not what I thought it would say, but good for them I guess, it is nice
November 26, 2025 at 2:13 AM
This station (in Fukushima prefecture remember) has a sign outside that tells you the current radiation dose.

Its tricky to tell if this is high or not, but 0.06µSv seems pretty low.
November 26, 2025 at 2:01 AM
I'm the end I'm glad I took this one in the light, its the first one with a proper station building after a long series of minimal platforms. Yanagawa done!
November 26, 2025 at 1:33 AM
good morning Bluesky
November 26, 2025 at 1:03 AM
After some difficulty communicating the price of the ticket back (I'm bad at numbers in Japanese still but I think he also made a mistake?) the guard gave me this card as a souvenir for my trip 😆
November 25, 2025 at 11:23 AM
I'm in a roll, Nitta done!
November 25, 2025 at 10:54 AM
Niida, photo taken and on my way!
November 25, 2025 at 10:51 AM
I'm just sat here watching the footie
