After my divorce, my sons split Thanksgiving day between me and my ex-wife. I always took the first half of the day and made cioppino for lunch. it was very liberating to have a meal that could be a tradition, but that was also free of the weight of the past and that we could modify if we wanted.

I just found some Brown Alumni Magazines to throw away in disgust when I noticed the teaser in the upper left hand corner of an issue cover from this spring. Since publishing this article, Brown apparently has decided that, as a matter of university policy, “gender reckoning” is as simple as “M/F.”

The “argument” about the legitimacy of transgender identity is a lot of tail chasing about definitions. It reminds me of William James’ parable about how philosophers debated the meaning of “around.” The “argument” is really an attempt to find a rationale for dehumanizing trans people.
