and of course that's why they'll win a massive majority in parliament (probably off like high 30s of the vote too)

oh well four years of PP likely won't destroy the country, canada has even more resilient political institutions than the US and i still think the US will survive four more years
December 5, 2024 at 4:09 PM
and of course the cpc/pp-cult: entire existence is just posting video takedowns of the liberals, only policy is withdrawing from the WEF and getting rid of the carbon tax, literally blames everything on trudeau/the liberals, vague transphobic signaling

it's starmerism vapidness but worse
December 5, 2024 at 4:09 PM
ironically it's foreign policy that's sealed that the libs are the least bad for me: the ndp is chock full of russia apologists, the gpc is even more chock full of russia apologists, the bloc is good on everything except all the important issues (not that i live in qc so), the ppc, well nvm

he is not great, this is not difficult

snc-lavalin? blackface? waste of money 2021 election (ft bragging about minority govt w/o plurality of votes)? nonexistent defense spending such that a well armed right wing american militia could invade canada and win? come on, the current federal govt is bad

but still, nothing is set in stone and autocracy only really wins if it has external support and people don't believe in their own ability to change things

(and at least any currently foreseeable quasi-autocratic US government will not enjoy the full support of CRINK)
December 5, 2024 at 3:52 PM
hence why CRINK is such a threat in the context of rising autocracy - lukashenko is an obvious example of someone who owes his entire position to them

in this regard the US is vulnerable since no other country will hold the US government to account for anything because they can't power wise
December 5, 2024 at 3:52 PM
i think one thing we can see is that authoritarian regimes or wannabe authoritarian regimes not backed up by another external more powerful authoritarian regimes are usually vulnerable to changes in power, those who survive are afforded unconditional support by powerful foreign autocrats
December 5, 2024 at 3:52 PM
of course hungary can't really be too much more autocratic than that given it is dependent on being a member of western multilateral institutions (EU and NATO), and in this respect the US is much closer to georgia than hungary (since the US can easily withdraw from said multilateral institutions)
December 5, 2024 at 3:52 PM
well we all know rules aren't always enforced with the same level of rigour
December 5, 2024 at 6:02 AM
no, the DPP aren't authoritarians of any sort and definitely still further away from that than both the KMT and TPP, but one would think they know better and that their country experienced martial law recently enough for it to very much be part of their societal understanding
December 5, 2024 at 5:50 AM
I've never had much time for ex DPP grandees lamenting the state and ideology of today's party - they made the DPP's structure, and Taiwan today is not in the place it was in the 80s and 90s and for the better, but I can't dismiss them as easily after this episode
