It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Native American veteran Charles Norman Shay. He was 101. Charles was a 19-year-old US Army medic when he landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day and helped save lives. He died at his home in Bretteville-L'Orgueilleuse, here in Normandy.

On 19 August 1942, over 6,050 infantry set foot on Dieppe beach with high hopes. Unfortunately, none of the objectives set were met, and a total of 4800 soldiers were either killed, wounded, or captured, with over 900 deaths among the Canadians alone. We remember them today and always. #LestWeForget

The Juno Beach Centre honours all Canadians who served and sacrificed during WW2. However, to date there was no single monument on Juno Beach that contained the names of each of the 381 Canadians who lost their lives on June 6, 1944 🇫🇷❤️🇨🇦
