It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Native American veteran Charles Norman Shay. He was 101. Charles was a 19-year-old US Army medic when he landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day and helped save lives. He died at his home in Bretteville-L'Orgueilleuse, here in Normandy.

On 19 August 1942, over 6,050 infantry set foot on Dieppe beach with high hopes. Unfortunately, none of the objectives set were met, and a total of 4800 soldiers were either killed, wounded, or captured, with over 900 deaths among the Canadians alone. We remember them today and always. #LestWeForget
