@lewisgoodall.bsky.social Here's an argument as to why not blocking causes anger and outrage and turned twitter in what it became. Whilst there is a fine balance between echo chamber & free speech with the later you want the ability to walk away and not have to listen.
This sounds surprisingly plausible.
FWIW, I think that it may well be exposure to other views which has increased polarisation. In the olden days, a Guardian reader wouldn't have had a clue what was in the Mail. And vice versa. Social media has increased exposure to different views. And very often, people react in outrage to them.
