Essentially animanga fandom swung back to being about men because publisher no longer saw the uptick of female comic readers as a viable market due to sexism (ie girls read across the aisle and boys don't)

I don't think you guys realize how much the 08 market crash completely changed the landscape of anime and manga in the US
Before it EVERYONE wanted a piece of the shoujo pie because there was an unprecedented amount of girls into manga compared to comics
