Here's what I sent to Target -- use it as a template if it resonates
Dear Brian and Katie, My favorite Target purchases: kids clothes. You sell cute ones at a great price. I also loved your books selection and the collabs with designers. I will no longer buy from you. I've advocated in my own career for DEI in every workplace. A diverse staff is good for the bottom line. You cannot hire top talent by ignoring large swaths of people, and whether it's Black people or trans people, a lot of populations struggle for access -- even to get interviews. That's why making an effort to connect with marginalized and underrepresented groups matters. You widen the net as much as possible to reach as much talent as you can and then make the best hires. As for Target itself, you have a hugely diverse customer base!  I was so struck by this Costco statement a few weeks ago: “Among other things, a diverse group of employees helps bring originality and creativity to our merchandise offerings, promoting the ‘treasure hunt’ that our customers value,” Costco said in its proxy statement to investors. “We believe (and member feedback shows) that many of our members like to see themselves reflected in the people in our warehouses with whom they interact.” This applies directly to Target. You have a hugely diverse customer base! You need that diversity to best delight the people who spend hard-earned dollars with you. I'm disappointed in Target and I'm taking my money elsewhere. I urge you to reconsider your recent shifts.
