In the DSM-II published in 1968 the official diagnosis was actually schizophrenia, childhood type. Autism was considered a symptom. Schizophrenia obviously really misunderstood, too. Also back in the day autism was sometimes diagnoised as epilepsy (what we now know can be a common co-condition).
