There was a LOT of loud misogyny during both 2016 and 2024, and from what I saw, very little push back from any party. True, I don’t think it was a non-issue that Harris was a part of a mostly feckless administration, but Clinton didn’t have that problem, and the sexism was still wild.

And chigo were of course the (mostly religious) predecessors to wakashu, who Joshua Mostow also argues can be considered a third gender, so I’d definitely look for his stuff too. A lot of it has to do with sexual politics though, so just be prepared.

I’ve been writing a bit on chigo (temple acolytes), and one person I would definitely recommend on this subject is Sachi Schmidt-Hori, who basically argues that the gender of chigo was neither male nor female, but rather “child.” Different from prepubescent children and more feminine than adult men.
