TLDR: nope, forced labor did not leave lasting economic scars in Peru ... if you mean lasting to today. If you limit yourself to a more reasonable two century timeframe, then yes, it was bad. But go listen to Leticia Abad!
Did colonial forced labor in Peru leave a lasting economic scar — or did its shadow fade long before independence? @noelmaurer.bsky.social and @larroyoabad.bsky.social , @gwu1821.bsky.social , @cuny.edu , discusses: faculti.net/how-colonial...

We have no idea if the Trump administration will actually follow through with the $30 billion, but if it does then it is a very big deal. An explainer on Argentina’s recent market turbulence:

The Trump administration bails out Argentina! But why did they need it?

Curious about what an invasion of Venezuela would actually look like? No? Well, it’s kind of interesting anyway, so go read and comment over on Substack!

You will know if the U.S. is planning to invade Venezuela

I am honestly at a loss as to what is happening
Chile is an ultra-low fertility outlier (likely to be below 1.0 TFR in 2024). According to INE: 60% identify as Christian (45% Catholic+15% Protestant)& only ~20% of Chileans live in apartments with many others living in houses or other more spacious than apartment dwellings.

This is an interesting paper. I also have strong doubts that it has external validity. I would be interested in replicating it for Mexico, because my prior is that is doesn't fit the facts there. Anyone interested?

The PM of Canada should have offered provincial status to any American state willing to take it. Are you really sure that President Trump would have said no?

Here's an exploration of what would likely happen were New York State to switch federal allegiances: noelmaurer.typepad.com/aab/2020/11/...

Why do countries bother to post collateral on their debt? I mean, they're sovereign and generally hold the collateral under their own jurisdiction.

There is an answer:
