Double-Decker Bus Sometimes less obvious dates matter most. Tuesday, the first week, New Jersey. I watch from the hired car a bunting of hefty Americans leave the bank you were in. Each hoisting belts as a well-worn reflex, spot-lit on steps by the brazen late October sun. Only then were we properly there. Or that winter beach, a time when every photograph counted. Here you are: turning away from me, speaking with the rudely intruding ocean; a nervous gust caught gauche under your long blue coat. I asked you the following day. Even the birth has shrunk as the utmost date, the love already decided. It struck on the jolting bus, after the phone call, when we knew for certain. Upstairs, front seat, shaken and lifted all the way there.

Persephone says Persephone says that she dreams of the snow’s soft falling. She sits in the shade all alone and she thinks that there’s nothing worth learning, and no-one worth calling. Persephone says she no longer remembers her reasons for returning. Her pomegranate days seem palely out of synch with the pull and the yearning of the seasons. Persephone says she no longer believes in the meaning of those small things that used to sustain her. Most nights, she drinks. The woodlands are burning. She wearies of her long inbetweening.

Nakba We are already deep into that night where the unspeakable creeps out; we sense the tapping of its spindle fingers as it feels it way along the walls, crawls to meet the rhythm of our hurrying feet; we are anxious to reach the safety of home where the lamps are lit and there are, we think, no shadows to disquiet us. We walk, try to keep ourselves from running, but the monsters of our unfinished business wait just ahead. Wraithlike, they slip in behind us as we open the front door, sit in our favourite chairs; their rictus smiles greet us when we enter the sanctuary of our living room and turn on the light.

Aren't we tempted so often to think of ourselves and each other in terms of "they are this" and "I am that". This delicious poem travels through a St Elmo's fire of mythological allusion in the end to have me reflect on the truth of "this" and "that" not as opposites but as twins born of one womb.

The theme is #FavouritePlace & has a attracted a wide range of responses, from numinous locales through to the human body itself as a place.
