I was listening to S5E120 of Tides on the drive in to work this morning, and it hit extra hard. "Nothing was more dangerous for a state in the ancient world than elites who wanted to seize that state for themselves... the greatest risk always came from within."

@patrickwyman.bsky.social , enjoyed your TOH episode on what might have happened if Alexander died at the Granicus. But I don't understand how you think Rome's success was contingent on Alexander's conquest. In 334, Rome was a central Italian power on the upswing.
