Today we learned skip counting with my ML class. Students practice multiplication w/ spaced repetition and can remember products when framed in ways they’re comfortable with or may even skip count unintentionally, but presented as repeated addition it quickly reveals gaps in addition skills. #edusky

First day of my fulltime practicum placement! Today I supported ML learners with numeracy and helped students navigate Geogebra to complete an assignment. Seating dynamics were my takeaway from today: Friends sitting together who respect each others learning vs friends who don’t. #edusky

Incredible day in my math classroom- students worked at 5 different stations doing varied activities in factoring and expanding quadratics. Student attitudes towards learning have been fantastic relative to the start of the year (perhaps due to midterm reports). Very proud of some of my students.

Yesterday, I took part in a meeting which highlighted for me the difficulty of learning math as an ELL/ML student. An English classroom along with complex vocabulary presents big challenges. One solution: routinely and intentionally connecting definitions with graphics/examples (e.g. word banks)

My first year studying education is over and I’ve finished my first practicum placement. I’ve gained so much knowledge not just about teaching and student relationships but also about myself. Looking forward to my second year, but for now- planning summer and taking it easy. Stardew Valley awaits😅

Students who I find struggle to focus and engage with worksheet material are cooperating and making key connections. Today I discussed areas of shapes and relating the area of rectangles to triangles. Students realized how drawing a line in the correct spot creates two equal triangle halves.

Beginning my second full-time practicum period has been very exciting and motivational! I’ve recently been focusing on implementing thinking classroom ideas in my math classroom and students seem to be receiving the change in structure well. Reflections- need to continue working on consolidation.

This is the first time I’m in school on a PA/PD day! Excited to join a community of teachers and gain some insight on math education.

I’ve been reading about spiraling in the context of a high school math curriculum and it seems like such a beautiful concept- I wonder what being in that sort of classroom environment as a student must be like. I hope to one day have the ability to give that experience to my students.

Excited to be back in Ottawa for my second semester of learning and continuing my practicum part-time. Now that I’ve gained so many new experiences, it’ll be interesting to see how I can apply my course materials in the future and how I could have used them in the past.

My first four weeks of full time practicum have ended! In this time, gained invaluable experience and expanded my worldview by so much- being able to really do this and see what works and what doesn’t, how to be similar and how to be different compared to the teachers I respect.

Starting my second week of practicum with many lessons in independent teaching and classroom management. The satisfaction of feeling like you did a good job is tough to balance with feeling like you could have done better!

Yesterday I went into my first day of practicum placement. Learning about teaching is one thing but being in a real classroom observing things being put into practice is something else entirely. Felt very natural helping students where I could: Need to keep a friendly yet professional attitude!
