My take on the World Series? I support Shohei Ohtani’s role as global ambassador for Oi Ocha. I’m a regular Ito En drinker and I agree with Ohtani’s take: “So much is happening these days. It makes sense to take a break for green tea.”

Strange! Print (dead, buried, useless next to the grand powers of digital marketing) is back...again!

I have a new edition available of "Seeing Scabby," my 2021 fanzine essay about the giant inflatable rat balloon used by striking unions. Thanks to Tanline Printing in Tucson, Scabby is now a 2-color, full Riso zine (in flat gold and purple).

Here’s a whole article on how one illustrator, Ward Schumaker, achieves his free-flowing drawing style. The secret? He repetitively draws the same thing until his hand is so familiar with the forms that it flows out naturally. Far from automatic.

Articles on new tech like the Quantel Paintbox describe the digital creative process as “disembodied” and cerebral rather than manual. Mostly, these qualities are appreciated by Art Directors, who feel more control over the production process.

By the late ‘80s, these craft-based articles are accompanied by ads for software, like Illustrator, which claim to automate the entire technical process.

I have been reading a bunch of old graphic design mags for research and one of the takeaways is just how much of the craft of the past has been lost. These mags (Step-By-Step, How, Print, AIGA) are filled with how-to’s on oil painting, airbrushing, masking, split fountain, prepping mechanicals…

It's my first time at the fest and my first time in the city :) Come say hi and buy some zines! Free Admission, 11-5pm

I am also thoroughly honored to be joining such a welcoming community of cartoonists and past fellows (represented here by a photo of me at a lighthouse in Portland, Maine).

In addition to projects at the Applied Cartooning Lab (appliedcartooning.org, exciting things coming!), I'll be working on a new graphic biography of Walter Benjamin, zines, and ongoing research on the changing relations of production for graphic artists during the desktop publishing revolution.
