Speechless at Inuk artist Billy Gauthier’s newish sculpture, Silatsualimâk, Anânavut (The Earth, Our Mother), at The Rooms. Carved from a fin whale skull, the installation next to view of St John’s harbour is spectacular even on a gloomy evening.

@brookenewman.bsky.social Finally installed the surgery-delayed laundry room bloody heavy countertop. Shame entryway closet projects into this room so much, but wallpaper looks ok. Like the heavy duty levelling feet to give me a gap under the upright for any water or mopping floor. Big improvement.

I’m Spousal Unit’s +1 tonight (as usual) under the blue whale skeleton, for the installation reception of our new university president, Dr Janet Morrison, and provost, Dr Jennifer Lokash. When I interviewed here I was struck that nearly all the senior admin I met were women; still true for most part

Last kayak expedition of the year with the lad, warm autumn sun, lake like glass. Thanksgiving weekend at my brother’s house. #Kayak

Ok, this is pretty funny stuff. One story in Bermuda’s Royal Gazette from Feb 1846, a second story from Dec that same year. First, great praise of former sergeant and now hotelier Wm Oldfield’s honour and integrity. Second, ah well, Wm Oldfield has absconded owing thousands of dollars. #Bermuda

Few things are more enjoyable than a discussion class from which your full piece of chalk comes back as a nubbin. Lots of connecting arrows today, students on a roll. Teaching is a joy and a privilege.

Urgent update: Big Yoda has eaten the cooked chicken that was cooling on the furthest back corner reaches of the counter. All of it. Four boneless breasts. Is he still looking for his kibble? Yes, yes he is.

Many thanks! Brunch overlooking the ocean was a delight. I need to get this jellyfish wallpaper now (and the hobbit sauna). I thought it might be this lovely local designer (www.kristapower.com/www/wallpaper/) but doesn’t seem to be one of her’s.

Whoever did their branding did a nice job. Though that big wave is a little worrisome. Hopefully that’s post-brunch.

24th Anniversary getaway an hour down the coast to Burnt Cove and Cliffs Side Retreat. Lovely Atlantic view from the hot tub. The sea to table restaurant is called Forager, which I’m hoping is more descriptive than instructional. Near here is La Manche, a village wiped out in a storm in 1966.

English MP A.P. Herbert’s assessment of Newfoundlanders in 1943 seems a little over the top. Makes you wonder what sort of filth he was encountering at Oxford that led him to this, in contrast. #Newfoundland

Minding my own business and hear a ‘sprong’ sound. My computer glasses just cracked whilst on my head. Flexed my cranium? Bloody hell, something else to take care of. What really separates the rich from us is the time spent on endless minor but necessary tasks.

My parents’ 64th wedding anniversary
today, married in Rutherglen. My poor father is in a dementia home, oblivious to the day. I love this photo of him just graduated from University of Strathclyde in mechanical engineering, my mother a paediatric nurse in the Gorbels before they moved to London.

These rich republicans are remarkably bad dressers, but their posture is even worse.

Big Yoda was invited next door for the kids’ movie night. He looks a little confused. Earlier they had him chasing after the cat laser pointer toy so he might be worn out here. #Dogs #Malamutes

Friend down the street asked if I wanted some old books from her basement. Turned out it was the fifth and sixth volumes of 1792 Edinburgh edition of Raynal’s History, with an interesting contemporary inscription. Now I wonder where the other volumes might be… #OldBooks #EarlyModern
