If they stop playing by the rules, it doesn’t sound like a fun game.
Doesn’t game theory suggest that in a stable, cooperative system where powerful agents play by a set of established rules, someone who “defects” & stops playing by the rules wins big for awhile, but then the system gets destabilized, chaos rules, & eventually a new system gets rebuilt on the ruins?

Professional D&D players, with more dice then I’ll ever see in person, tend to lack basic statistical skills. (…and they’re just havin’ fun and don’t seem to care, occasionally impressed by a mathematician)
After seeing one bond guy struggle with basic percentages on live television and another fail at elementary game theory on Bluesky within weeks of one another, really starting to buy the idea that the 40-year bull market in fixed income made successes out of some stone-cold morons.
This is incredibly embarrassing for PIMCO IMO.

My friends, the GM is usually just trying to spend time with their friends and is happy to put in the extra work, until the players naturally take on more responsibility. Eventually, the DM may just watch the show. There doesn’t have to be a power struggle. 😉
One of the best ever short articles in RPG theory claims that the entity called the "game master" is just a series of functional and social roles that can be divided up amongst a player group, easy peasy.
