This year, the data told a clear story: clean energy is gaining momentum, but policy choices still decide whether it tops the charts or stays stuck in the queue.

Here’s our Clean Energy Wrapped: the trends, the numbers, and the signals Europe can't ignore.

España debe anunciar oficialmente lo que ya somos, un estado libre de carbón
Mallorca’s Alcudia coal plant just filed for closure in 2026, meaning every remaining coal plant in 🇪🇸 has now applied to shut down.
What's left? The govt dotting a few i’s and crossing some t’s.
Spain could end coal today… if someone picked up a pen.

Spain reached a historic milestone this summer: between 3 July - 16 September, the its power system operated entirely without coal.

With coal accounting for < 1% of 🇪🇸's electricity generation this year, it’s on the brink of completing a full coal phase-out.

Europe's electricity system is changing rapidly and often in places that don't make the headlines.

Look at Estonia - not that long ago and fossil fuels dominated around 90% of electricity generation.

Today solar and wind eat more and more into the share of fossil fuel-generated electricity.

In the US, some states have seen electric bills climb 12-16% higher this year.

Why? Their high concentration of data centres and capacity-market costs.

Europe must regulate unchecked data centre growth and power them with new and additional renewables.

Data centers are concentrated in these states. Here's what's happening to electricity prices
Residential utility bills rose 6% on average nationwide in August compared with the same period last year, according to the Energy Information Administration.

"Today I call on every major tech film to power all data centres with 100% renewables by 2030," says Antonio Guterres.

But that's not enough. New @ouest-france.fr video highlights our message: data centres must be powered by new AND additional renewables.

Renewables are one side of the story, but to run a fully clean energy system, we also need modern grids and clean flexibility to balance supply and demand.

Our new mini-guide breaks down how soaring data centre demand, fuelled by AI, is straining energy systems and slowing the transition in Europe.

At #COP30, governments and tech giants need to realise data centres growth needs new and extra renewables, and can’t come at our planet’s expense.

Time for our quarterly update, and we’re starting with good news!

Coal generation in Spain 🇪🇸 has dropped 97% since the early 2000s, making up just 1% of the country’s power mix so far this year. The payoff? Cleaner air and 95% drop in emissions from coal power in ten years.

New polling on data centres finds 72% of Europeans want a measure requiring new data centres be built only if they’re powered by new and additional renewable energy.

⚠️ People aren’t willing to trade the climate for unsustainable data centre growth.

🧛‍♂️People in Europe say no to energy vampires!
⚡We don't want data centres to suck our energy and have priority access to electricity over other critical sectors and uses
☀️ We need more renewables, not industries that heavily rely on fossil fuels and slow down the transition
