Happy 85th birthday Wendy Carlos, who revolutionised the synth with Bob Moog, made electronic music before Eno & Kraftwerk, & composed scores for Tron, Clockwork Orange and The Shining. A trans icon, Carlos gave few interviews but this BBC one features her beloved cat www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3ca...

"Sorrow is composed of a heart in autumn."

A few notes on translating Xin Qiji's short lyric that I had a written a while back. (yes, it's on my substack, only bc I needed to find a place to park it after the original publishing site disappeared...) open.substack.com/pub/chowleen...
One of my favorite poems since childhood, and a poem I share every #autumnequinox.
By the 12thc warrior poet Xin Qiji 辛棄疾, sidelined during peacetime, demoted, drifting through a decade of minor posts in remote lands.
Poetry, then, is that which is left unsaid.
“My, what a cool and lovely autumn.”

Not yet immune to the real-real, I sat and watched with such anxiety, such nausea—it seemed.. immoral to go to sleep"

I'm on the board of intersectional feminist journal MAI, which looks at various aspects of visual culture, and our latest issue is fresh off the virtual presses. Best of all, it's a special issue on Agnès Varda! Viva Varda! maifeminism.com/issues/focus...
MAI Focus Issue 12: Reframing Varda
In this issue of MAI, we asked authors to start with an image from Agnès Varda’s work and present an analysis guided by their close reading.

Academic folks who spent not so small fortunes on the books from the library you needed but could never keep during the 1990s and 2000s, have you ever considered where you want your books to go after you pass? Most grad students today don’t want your physical books. Nor do most univ. libraries.

Four years in, being widowed still doesn’t feel like being single, which my divorced friends rarely understand. (I spent last weekend organizing dozens of boxes of my late husband’s research materials with one of his colleagues.) This piece rings true: www.nytimes.com/2023/11/03/s...
A Marriage Problem That Can’t Be Solved
My husband and I haven’t spoken in more than a year. It can’t go on like this, but it will.

Many publications have misguided policies that restrict the civic participation of their journalists on the spurious logic that such actions would jeopardize the publication’s reputation & veneer of neutrality—outcomes that are always more frequently & efficiently achieved by publishing hot garbage.

Why Norway — the poster child for electric cars — is having second thoughts

Electric cars are crucial, but not enough to solve climate change. We can’t let them crowd out car-free transit options.

I never understood the six feet separation rule. It doesn’t make sense. Scientists revisiting the distinction between airborne and aerosols have discovered why it makes no sense.
