Introducing my books through the lazy medium of comparing them to great films 😀 HERETIC and LILITH both feature protagonists who preach the One True Religion. But Mr Reed’s, like most religions conceived by men, does NOT end well for women 😳
Ironically, Lilith tells us herself what happens when you ban words: “They leap beyond those denouncing men. They soar above those who mock them from pulpits… They fly into the world and are read, discussed and debated. They reach those with open minds and breaking hearts.” 🐍🐍🐍

LILITH is a banned book - but she's used to that. She's been banned since the dawn of time for asking some VERY dangerous questions... What are you reading for #BannedBookWeek2025?

“Their hoped for afterlife shifted their gaze from this world. Why care for it? Why cherish it? If there is something better to come. Why take any notice of it at all? This mere blink before the superior business of eternity.”

Thank god I was born too late to be an Excellent Woman - the single women who manage everything (unpaid, of course) in Pym’s 1952 novel, from parish jumble sales to soothing the marital troubles of more glamorous neighbours. Brilliant comic writing from Barbara Pym ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Shout out to @peepmybookshelf for the iconic comparison, it stuck with us! We’ve pulled together some of our favourite quotes from the book that definitely give feminist manifesto energy

If you're interested in knowing more about Gertrude Eileen Trevelyan and her remarkable novels (four now available from @bhousepress.bsky.social), I invite you to watch the presentation I put together almost 5 years ago, before I had any hope of bringing her work back to print.

These are 2 of hundreds of 8th-7th BC terracotta goddess figures - likely Asherah, once consort of Yahweh - found from Ancient Israel and Judah. She is usually depicted with milk-heavy breasts and was probably kept in a household shrine.

I will once again be giving prizes* for book shop Father's Day displays that don't include Clarkson, WWII, arctic explorers, Stalingrad, or books that refer to the wife as "the war office."

And before you say that men don't read books - men who read books DO read books.

*in spirit anyway.

A fifteenth-century gold Angel coin depicting the Archangel Michael, recovered from the wreck of the Mary Rose. This is an Edward IV version. Edward introduced the Angel to Britain in 1465, and different versions were minted until 1662. They were so iconic that many pubs were named after them

Please, if you have a Labour MP, write to them & ask why they are so determined to help rich Ai companies keep secret what copyrighted work they steal from creatives to make a profit. I mean everyone write to your Labour MP cos when they destroy our income, it takes money out of your local economy.

This guy kneeling in a panel of the Black Obelisk of Shalmaneser III at the British Museum is Jehu, the 9th c BC king of Israel who murdered Queen Jezebel (and most of her family, including 70 children whose heads he cut off and left by the city gates).

Gob, the world’s first narrator tells the story of the first word. For he was there 35,000 years ago, when man first spoke (the women had been speaking for a while, “mouthing off” their own private ancient sounds the men could never grasp 🤣)
