December 20, 1959, the Kīlauea Iki eruption came to an end. During the eruption, lava fountains reached heights of approximately 320 meters (1,050 feet)—the highest lava fountains recorded on Hawaiʻi for at least a century.

According to a study by ETH Zurich, trees can counteract climate change more effectively than previously thought. There would still be room for a third of the current forest area on earth. This would also not affect cities or agricultural areas, the researchers wrote in "Science"
