A photograph of a male Hairy-footed flower bee in flight as he approachs a cluster of blue purple flowers of Green Alkanet (Pentaglottis sempervirens). He is in side profile approaching from the left as viewed with a rusty-brown body. His legs are dangling backwards and you can just make out the long feathery hairs on his middle legs and feet which gives this species its name. His long tongue is out with cream hairs above ready to feed. The background is blurred in mottled shades of green; another flower spike is just visible on the right in the distance. This species of bee is an important early pollinator of spring flowers in the UK and seeks out lungworts, dead-nettles and comfrey.
