A February poll from Colombia shows that support for civil unions between homosexual couples is falling and consistently so. Its one of a growing number of polls showing support for gay rights slipping.

Lula has seen his net approval rating crash between December and February, according to the latest IPEC poll. It's now -15%, this is a ditch that looks all but impossible to recover from. Next year's election increasingly looks like the opposition's to lose.

The global shift towards a libertarian right is continuing apace with Johannes Kaiser surging in the polls to contest first place with front-runner from the centre-right Chile Vamos coalition, Evelyn Matthei.

An image that is hard to imagine in most democracies today. The winner of the presidential election in Uruguay, Yamandú Orsi, hugs his opponent, Alvaro Delgado, on the day of Orsi's inauguration.

Monthly economic data indicates an impressive V-shaped economic recovery in Argentina for 2024, accompanied by disinflation. Growth will likely strengthen further when currency controls are lifted this year.

According to the latest monthly economic activity indicator for December, Argentina's GDP contracted by 1.8%.

This is significantly less than what consensus had expected at 2.7%.

This is a big win for Milei's bet on expansionary austerity.

According to the latest Cadem poll, half of Chileans have a favourable opinion of Trump. Why? A reason seems to be an overwhelming majority of Chileans agree with Trump's policies clamping down on undocumented migration & militarization of the border.

Another notch in Milei's belt. Homicides are the lowest level since at least 2000 in 2024. This is despite a recession. Quite impressive.

🇦🇷Real salaries in Argentina have recovered from the maxi-devaluation of December 2023 when Milei took power. However, after over a decade of high inflation, it will take many more years of low inflation and growth to get to 2015 levels.

Johannes Kaiser, the self-proclaimed libertarian candidate, in Chile's upcoming presidential election now out polls conservative J.A. Kast in the lastest AtlasIntel poll in Chile. He also ties with the left's preferred candidate, Carolina Toha, who is Boric' Min of Interior.

I told the The Inter-American Dialogue's newsletter that "the Peronist movement remains tethered to former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner" adding "her political objectives appear focused on gaining immunity...rather than offering voters a compelling policy alternative"

Outgoing Uruguayan president, Luis Lacalle Pou, goes off on a high note with an approval rating of 58%!

Trudeau's resignation was only a matter of time, especially after Trump won. Polls show that he's been very unpopular since 2021, owing to high inflation, a housing crisis, a weak dollar, mismanaged migration & controversial uses of state power to stifle dissent.

Almost 1% of Argentina's population lives in Spain.

There are about 2 million less people in poverty now on Argentina than when Milei took office. The stretch goal for 2025 would be to get poverty to 2017 levels.

Gloomy prospects for 2025 in Canada: "Some economists expect tariffs would shave an estimated 2% to 4% from Canadian gross domestic product"
January 1, 2025 at 4:31 PM
Disinflation under Milei has done more than any government program to reduce poverty. Poverty has fallen to levels last seen before the pandemic. Notably the decline in poverty has happened amid a recession. Next year, poverty will fall more amid a firm economic recovery.

Chileans have soured on the last three presidents. This is a worrying sign as dissatisfaction spans both the left & right, which opens the door for an anti-establishment outsider to shake up Chilean politics in 2025.
December 30, 2024 at 1:16 AM
🇦🇷Milei enters 2025 with a high level of approval & indications are that he'll maintain this high of support next year. The economy will grow >5% & inflation is on track to be the lowest since at least 2017. If he losses support it'll probably be due to a self-inflicted scandal

🇵🇦Panama's president, José Raúl Mulino, pens a firm letter defending Panama's sovereignty over the Panama Canal.

🇺🇸🇵🇦This is the last thing new Panamanian presdient, José Raúl Mulino, wanted for Christmas.

Donald Trump is threatening to retake the Panama Canal from Panama, which has run the canal since 1979.

I believe this may be a way to pressure Panama for more cooperation on the Darian Gap.

🇦🇷 Argentina's economic contraction this year is set to be around 2.5-3%, which is a better performance than was originally thought when Milei came into power. 👇🏻
