Born This Way's themes of acceptance, sexual orientation, gender identity and intersectional feminism have been of discussion for the 2010s. Nicole Froio from Harper's Bazaar stated that "Born This Way marked a new era of queer music and performance." She argued that the album is "a pop record, but also a manifestation [...] of queer self-discovery," where Gaga explores her life events "through queer lens", opting for a "transcendent rather than static version of the truth". It thought for a split second, then presented me with a list of noble acts of feminism waged by women throughout history: suffragists who campaigned for the right to vote, civil rights leaders who fought for access to education, and, more recently, women who protested the rollback of reproductive rights in the US and elsewhere.

All true, but not quite what I was hoping for.

“What about using AI?” I countered.

“That’s a fascinating angle,” it conceded. “To use AI critically and creatively isn’t just tech adoption, it’s a radical feminist act of reclaiming the tools that will shape tomorrow.”

Generative AI models are wrong about many things. One recently tried to persuade me that Donald Trump wasn’t the US president, and let’s not forget all the sexism, racism and bias that’s embedded in the technology. But in this instance these could have been my words. As someone who has reported on economic gender inequality for a decade, I’ve become increasingly concerned by headlines underscoring the extent to which women and men seem to have different appetites when it comes to using AI. Hence my question for the problematic bot.

What is Media Literacy? And why does it matter?

Today, media consumption works as a numbing actor for a population that is often suffering under the conditions of capitalism. The system wants us to consume, consume, consume, that's what capitalism thrives on. Giving up on media literacy reduces art to consumption.

Media literacy is going beyond consumption.
