A pantomime, such an apt image.

Of course friction will be major, how foolish would it be to think otherwise.

And for those who do not get it, the ultimate fault is Europe’s. Europeans put their faith in the USA and did not take their own security seriously. Europe is reaping what it sowed.

The idea that the blame should be focussed on trusting Trump is dodging the truth. The US population chose Trump, even after Jan 6, 2021, even after he talked about leaving NAT0 and after he talked about his respect for Putin. It is the action of the USA as a political entity.

Not surprising then that today Macron wishes that Europe at some point re-engages with Putin. That might be rationalising his purported last-minute push for plan B.

And in read in the Guardian that Macron had a role in pushing plan B, so I would add France to this list www.theguardian.com/world/2025/d...
EU’s Ukraine loan may have been Plan B, but don’t underestimate its significance to the bloc
This €90bn agreement won out over a plan to use frozen Russian assets, but has been hailed a ‘huge deal for the EU’

Yes indeed, France unease and fear, apparent in our recent reactions to strong words from our army chief of staff shows a potent strain of appeasement in us. Not totally surprising. We are the same people as in 1938, relieved by the Munich agreement.

Belgium and Italy were afraid. It is only human that they will try to hide it from themselves through humour and rationalisation.

Impossible to trust the USA

We Europeans have to get our act together and really start resisting the USA.
