@jamesgunn.bsky.social what’s more impressive, 10 million people who watched the movie or a random number of people who collectively viewed 1.6 billion minutes of the movie with no way of knowing if they actually watched it all? Why do streaming metrics only talk minutes?

Since we’re watching BvS UE this scene with Kevin Costner can’t be overlooked. Clark’s fortress of solitude is an internal one and this scene holds so much weight. I truly don’t think people were ready for this movie when it came out. Its themes and discussion are so much deeper the CBM today.

It was Ben Affleck’s birthday so why not celebrate the best Batman we’ve had in live-action. Bummed he never got to make his Batman film but I think it’ll be a long time before an actor really embodies the physical

The Batman has so many incredible shots, but watching him lead the citizens to safety & then carrying that woman to the stretcher was something special. The way she clings to him & how that affects him is incredibly moving, inspiring a belief in himself & showing that he can inspire hope.

There’s no universe where Avengers: Endgame is better than Avengers: Infinity War. I don’t care that it’s the culmination of x amount of years of MCU films. Infinity War is objectively a better story and complete film. Endgame has amazing moments, but it’s also just Marvel’s best hits.

Can’t remember the last time I saw a movie and felt compelled to seek out the source material afterwards. Haven’t bought a non-comic book in a very long time 😅 Nolan really did something incredible with Oppenheimer. For the life of me I can’t stop thinking about it. Brilliant stuff.

A solo Superman film with just Lex and no other supernatural threats can work with cheesy & cheery, but that approach to the character can’t sustain when he has to fight universe-ending level threats. We need a hero who is more powerful & able to fight battles we can’t. Someone else can save cats.

You can have tender moments & boy-scout bits, but to have a Superman in a world full of the evil DC rogues of the Justice League, you just can’t be all cheery & cheesy. It’s uninteresting & reduces the character to 50s tropes. The character & time have evolved. DC has mythology that Marvel doesn’t.

It’s clear there’s a PG version of Superman who’s great because he rescues cats, cleans his messes, & helps old people cross the street.

He’s also the most powerful being in the universe & is needed to help fight extraordinarily horrific foes. He can’t be all good and peaceful, sorry 🤷‍♂️

“I’m whatever Gotham needs me to be.”

Because he's the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So, we'll hunt him, because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent guardian. A watchful protector. A Dark Knight.

I was then led to Thank You For Smoking and absolutely loved that film, packed with smart writing and a lot of biting truths. A year later Up In The Air comes out and it’s a film I’ve loved watching for many years. It wasn’t until I got serious about film/review that learned the Reitman connection.

On to The Dark Knight tonight as we creep closer to Oppenheimer. Obviously Ledger & his performance are unmatched, but Aaron Eckhart is fucking incredible as Harvey Dent/Two-Face. Made me a huge fan of his when I saw this 6x in theaters. Nolan and crime thrillers is always a hit. Sensational movie.

Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard’s score completely elevates the already terrific and serious material that Goyer and Nolan wrote. Batman Begins is nearly 20 years old and it feels more alive and more incredible than most CB material today. DC is best when grounded and cinematic. Batman is best 🦇

A 4th of July weekend spent not editing, recording, writing, or watching. It was a beautiful time in the PNW and it was a nice little unplug before coming home and getting back to working on the website and platforms into the early hours 😅 Thank god for great Washington wine and weather.
