I read it a few years ago, & loved the nostalgia & thought it was pretty innovative for it's time. But I agree that the movie felt darker & even scarier for sure.
If you haven't recently, I'd suggest Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking glass -- unexpected winners as an adult reader!
