Scenes from "the surface of Mars," aka the summit of #MaunaKea #BigIsland #Hawaii, Oct 23 2025. It was tough to be outside in the below freezing, high-wind, very low-oxygen conditions of this place for longer than a few minutes at a time!

Newly equipped with the knowledge I obtained of what our surname 須田 looks like in kanji, my dad went and got it tattooed on his chest during our vacation in Hawaii.

Today I added a new #kokeshi doll to my collection. I picked this one up from an antique shop in Kaleakekua, originally sourced from an estate sale in Hilo. I’m guessing that this one was made here in HI due to its unorthodox features: the simple taper, side notches, signature on side vs bottom, etc

I captured this #GaussianSplat of the Mauna Kea Silversword, an endangered plant that only grows on the upper elevations of the volcano, which is in active preservation. The specularity of this beautiful plant is a great candidate for this capture technique. #NianticScaniverse #BigIsland #Hawaii

Another great new physical reissue of a mythical obscure record from @coldspringrecords.bsky.social . I would show the foldout too but for the overhead glare lol. They do such great work, and are also still shipping to the US under the “informational material” exemption unlike many Bandcamp vendors.

Moments from our visit to the excellent #AcademyMuseum on #MuseumRow LA, including the small featured exhibit "#Cyberpunk: Envisioning Possible Futures Through Cinema" and various featured costumes from another nearby exhibit. This museum is really good!! I haven't been before.

Another splat from Sat night's "Carved" @ Descanso Gardens. This thing was perfectly evenly lit, fully traversable, and I used the long selfie stick to get a good portion of the roof, but the main obstacle this time was just getting around the loads of people everywhere. #Scaniverse #GaussianSplat

Another splat from Sat night's "Carved" @ Descanso Gardens. This thing was perfectly evenly lit, fully traversable, and I used the long selfie stick to get a good portion of the roof, but the main obstacle this time was just getting around the loads of people everywhere. #Scaniverse #GaussianSplat
My favorite moment in “Carved” at Descanso Gardens was probably the lowest-key one. The spooky synth arpeggio, the thick fog and the gently flickering, highly detailed centerpiece fixtures in the “Mulberry Pond” had off-the-charts vibes.

My dad was right: this document is registering my grandpa for the koseki. This field says "Sanae Suda", which is his birth name before it was changed to George during WWII.

The first important validation from analyzing this document is that our surname is 須田. I have hesitated to look into this without a doc like this, even though not many alts come up when you search for すだ, but now that I have the koseki I can, for example, greenlight my dad getting a tattoo of it.
