I was also offended because my dad was a 'GOPWO'. A 19 yr old RAF Sergeant shot down in France, 5 years POW then home to a commission. All the bright young things jetted past him (he could never rise above Squadron Leader, RAF equiv of Major) and soon came to be his superior. It rankled. (pun, soz.)

From my experience with the military (BFBS jock), a warrant officer can gain a commission but can not serve in any rank higher than major. I remember the occasional older officer who'd come through the ranks being referred to as GOPWOs - Grossly Over Promoted Warrant Officers. Snobbish and nasty.

Astonishing. Apart from the human insights, for me the graphics were amazing. This, when you think about it being hand drawn, is just superb.

I'm no expert, but I wonder about the value in spotting commisioning trends. Fishing with slebs, f'rinstance, has become cross-channel popular. Is there anything in the commissioning matrix that can be mined?
