The distinction I was making was that while they both did terrible things, Littlefinger *knew* that he was a conniving shit, but Stannis kept telling himself that it was all for the greater good, & he was still a righteous man. Petyr admitted it, Stannis didn't.

I feel the books already answered that question, with a rather definitive No. Ned Stark was too pure for that world. To play the game of thrones, and survive, means that you must do some dishonorable things--whether you admit that to yourself or not (Littlefinger did, Stannis didn't).
