Completely agree. There’s definitely agency on the Dems side to shift the conversation and if it’s not shifting, they should be more combative with the media to keep drawing attention to it.

Agreed. They were also definitely not going to learn about democracy within the 6 months after Harris became the nominee.

From this NYT article, it wasn’t until two weeks before the election that they were running ads explicitly calling Trump a fascist. Everything flows from this simple fact so start with it. You can’t be like, “oh also he’s a fascist.” That’s bad messaging strategy. www.nytimes.com/2024/10/24/u...

Did Dems really attempt to run a focused campaign on protecting democracy though? I feel like it was pretty scattered. There was not a relentless, focused message saying, “Trump is a criminal. He will violate laws to enrich his friends. He will not help regular people like you.”

That is the biggest problem, by far. It is not their job to let Trump ramble — he does that all the time! He talks all. the. time.

But if you are a reporter/news org and you get him in a room, you cannot just let him talk and then brag about how many words he says. He’s a documented liar

Yeah I guess that’s possible. But he’s trying to tell Sanger that oil played no part in the decision to invade Venezuela (Sanger’s original question and Trump’s response — “The oil happened to be there”) which is ludicrous.

Trump is on record saying they briefed the oil companies before the raid

“I mean, I can do fast agreements” is just a hysterical phrase.

It’s also crystal clear that this is the first time Trump is hearing about this expiring arms control agreement.

“Well it sounds like it’s something that is due very quickly and I’ll have no problem taking care of it by tomorrow!”

This exchange is bonkers. And I do think it’s worth repeating that this is the President of the United States and he’s indisputably dumber than bricks.

Don’t think they would have ran the fawning front page photo that they used for Trump!

In the first two minutes of the interview Trump tries to say he didn’t even know Venezuela had any oil and Sanger doesn’t even flinch

Good thread about the interview itself bsky.app/profile/larr...
This fawning characterization of the meeting between Trump and 4 NY Times reporters is remarkable in either spinning every issue in Trump’s favor or in giving him the last word, even when it is a non sequitur./1

Even just skimming the headlines and sub headlines, the editorial choice is to present a man who has it all figured out — someone in complete control. And that’s not even close to the truth, bordering on fictional. Just an embarrassing front page that will age terribly
