So here’s a crazy thing. This cigarette bin at the entrance to the Vierville Draw, Dog Green Beach, #Omaha Assault Area is actually…the muzzle brake from the 50mm gun which once occupied the nearby bunker. Our fabulous local guide pointed this out to me.

Sadly got to hit the road back to #Orkney this morning so no time for a longer visit to @scotmaritimemuseum.bsky.social but here’s a few outdoor highlights: Clyde Puffer “Spartan”, steam yacht “Carola” and an amazing survivor, Air Sea Rescue Craft 10. Thanks again for hosting me! #NormandySailors

Achilles is a strong RN ship name with a proud tradition, including the Battle of the River Plate (& before anyone tries to be clever, she did not become HMNZS until 1941) Here’s a few predecessors: Achilles (F12, 1968); Achilles (C70, 1932); Achilles (1905) and Achilles (1863). Attention #naval #historians Anyone out there by any chance have copies of the Naval Staff Histories for Salerno (No.37) and Sicily (no.35). If so might you be willing to scan them for me? Thanks!

Yesterday I was lucky enough to visit the beautiful Longhope Lifeboat Museum and learn about the dreadful disaster of 1969, the ripples from which are still felt in this small community today. #Orkney #History #Maritime #Museums rnli.org/magazine/mag...

First 15mm ECW regiment. They’re not perfect, there’s a few open jackets that I missed & I got sick of reading blogs about whether London Trained Bands had red coats or not. I just don’t care that much. Mixed red & buff should annoy EVERYONE 😆 Also seems like nobody really knows #wargaming

By way of a contrast this was in my first week of work up here 😆

Right challenge accepted. I had a request for “photos from Orkney”. I can live with that being my purpose 😆

I’ve written four books, the most recent being Normandy: The Sailors’ Story, a naval history of the 1944 Normandy campaign, which came out this year with @yalebooks.bsky.social Back in the day I also did a bit of broadcast work as a contributor and presenter but not so much recently.

I started my career at the Imperial War Museum, moved to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard in 2011 & joined the National Museum of the Royal Navy in 2014. Down there I had the sheer joy of leading on the restoration of LCT7074, one of only two Landing Craft Tank surviving from the 1944 Normandy landings.

So here’s a quick intro for all the folk who have probably found me on a starter pack & know NOTHING about me. Nice to meet you all! I am a 20th Century naval historian currently based in beautiful #Orkney where I look after the museums for the Islands Council and get excited about wartime concrete.

I’m coming off X, I may not come back - it’ll be worse after 20/1/25. I’m doom scrolling to the point of obsession & finding a lot of unpleasant people. I try not to exist in an echo chamber but it’s making me ill. Can find me on the other place.
