Just flicked on Saving Private Ryan, which for the record I like, but it reminds me why I wrote #NormandySailors. Naval gunfire support, in particular destroyers operating impossibly close inshore, were arguably the difference between success & failure at Omaha. Where are they?

#NormandySailors presents the work of the Allied navies as a forgotten naval battle, the Battle of the Seine Bay, although geographically it spread well outside that congested and vulnerable body of water. 📷@USNavy

So now that I’ve finished #NormandySailors #DDay reading for a while I’ve challenged myself to read some books which have been on my shelves for FAR too long without being read cover to cover. These were the first. It’s been an extraordinary, illuminating but grueling journey.

Here's a quick 🧵on how I came to write #NormandySailors for the amazing @YaleBooks The naval history of the Normandy campaign cast a spell on me early on in my career. I was once asked which historical event I'd like to have seen & I answered ‘D-Day’ straightaway! @jo_godfrey

When Force S left Spithead, Talbot’s HQ ship HMS Largs hoisted the signal ‘Good Luck. Drive On’, keeping it flying until the last ship left...7th ML Flotilla played a popular song called ‘We Don’t Know Where We’re Going (Until We’re There)’. #Elan #Drama #NormandySailors #DDay80

Of course, I’ll look at D-Day & what it was like to operate off Sword, Juno, Gold, Omaha and Utah areas. But unlike most accounts of the Normandy campaign, which immediately rush ashore with the soldiers, and then stay there, #NormandySailors will be staying afloat. 📷IWM A23720a

After a quick canter from the fall of France in 1940 to August 1943, #NormandySailors will describe the early actions fought to establish dominance over the Seine Bay and how the invasion was planned, how the fleet was assembled and how the sailors were trained. 📷IWM H3821

At least 200,000 Allied sailors took part in Neptune, & more fought the wider battle. They weren't taxi drivers, but active combatants, maintaining a ceaseless watch & making the Bay history's greatest defended encampment. I hope I’ve done them justice. #NormandySailors. 📷@I_W_M

Sailors in the Seine Bay were not taxi drivers. They were active combatants, maintaining a ceaseless watch by day & night, turning the Seine Bay into the greatest defended encampment in history. Victory in #WW2 depended on them. #NormandySailors is their story. 📷IWM A24208
