When you call 999 for the code, the Fire & Rescue Service are alerted and can reach the river fast from Byker Fire Station. By holding onto the rope, you can keep trying until you reach someone in trouble - improving the chance of saving a life.

Indeed! I was speaking with residents yesterday who were most affected by this in Byker. Thankfully no one was physically harmed but it’s been terrifying for many. We need change on this before next year.

I had hoped we’d made some progress in Byker after last year but it was such a challenge last night. Passing this motion is the start of a wider campaign to prevent this escalating next year.
