You have to remember the first Europeans to colonise N America were religious nutters who thought puritanism in England too woke. Many in the "Confederacy" supported slavery even after abolition. White Americans have religious and racial extremism etched into their DNA.

Never equate religion with morality or decency

I have always said that religion and morality are not the same thing. They overlap sometimes but that is all.
