Drum Project #0003: PDP MX Maple, cut from 22x18 down to 22x14. Re-cut bearing edges, new heads, cleaned up hardware.

This one is going into my personal collection, which is one of a few reasons why i kept the finish as it was. i love the beat-up look this one has.

promise i’m very close now. gonna shoot with all the mics, processed and unprocessed, couple of different snares and tunings. i’ll make a video and post it on youtube so we can single-handedly jack up the price of some obscure mic on the secondhand market (or at least learn something). more soon.

the easiest way for me to do this is to run a laser-guided setup pointing toward a relatively flat studio monitor—that way i can run the same material through the monitor at the same volume for each combination and repeat the microphone angle and position.

setting up for a much more manageable SDC shootout. I’m A/B-ing a ton of incremental changes to the circuits, the bodies, and the capsules of these MXL 991s. Guessing a lot will be learned from these.

i’ll add more to this thread when i run the experiments.

…i’m going to have to do this mic shootout in multiple parts.

she’s all ready to go. if nobody bites on this snare, i may end up keeping it for myself.

here’s a cool one: got this Gretsch Catalina Club snare awhile back and decided do a silver coating inside like the classic Gretsch drums used to have.

also re-cut bearing edges and snare beds, as usual.

i’ll post more pictures when it’s all back together.

i have a Warm Audio TB-12 ToneBeast on my repair table today. i really love these units because i think they really allow fledgling audio engineers to parse differences between op-amps, transformers, etc.

i’m still trying to figure out why this one has no output, however…

i spent a ton of time reading interviews with drum builders/scouring drum company sites/etc and came up with an edge that really allows the drums to sing. i really didn’t know if it would work but it totally did!!!!

i’m so proud rn—i have 3 other drums to build but i’ll post pictures when i do.

board has been stuffed! just some solder joints to make and some leads to trim and we’re golden.

very happy with how the finish came out on this mic, btw! i’ve chosen a few changes to the circuit that goes along with this mic, so the old parts will be removed and replaced with the ones here.

beyond this, just awaiting a very special capsule from arienne audio and it’ll be testing time!

here’s a #feature that i find “refreshing”: if you go to the discovery feed and hit “home” a few times, it will actually refresh with new content. it’s nice because a single tap still just brings you back to the top, a feature that is crucial

the pdp kit has begun getting its finish applied! this kit will take several layers of satin polycrylic with a light sand in between. it’s going to be absolutely gorgeous.

now it’s finishing time. this mic is going to get a high-gloss pink, per client request. i’m still experimenting with mic body finishes as i’m still not sure how long they’ll last or how well this particular paint will adhere and dry. looks good so far though!

a comparison of a few different microphone body damping attempts, grouped from most effective (left) to least (right).

silicone rtv is by far the best option for this application. it’s a shame it’s so ugly in comparison.

see the alt text for more info.

taking this back from denver to do some repair work—putting this all the way up my ass to avoid baggage fees was, well, a real pain in the ass. 😳

will post updates about this piece later, along with a couple of other things i’ll be working on.

back in the early spring of 2015 i played my first show as a full-in drummer for a band called outline in color, and we were opening for secrets in Oklahoma City.

kinda full circle to be playing the last Ghost!InTheWall show of the year w them 9 years later.

trying hard to save the ply separation on this 1968 Rogers Holiday kit. this one has really been through the ringer, but it’ll sound really beautiful once it’s had some time put into it.

incremental update: this stuff is much less caustic and, ironically, much better at removing rust. i’ll say that you HAVE to immediately dry these pieces off once you’ve rinsed them—lesson learned.

learned something critically important here, which was that the vinegar bath really eats into chrome. i’ll probably try something else next time, while doing the same vinegar bath for the non-chromed parts.

the parts i plan to use immediately still polished right up with some turtle chrome polish.
