even if politics escapes you, you will NEVER escape politics.

Drum Project #0003: PDP MX Maple, cut from 22x18 down to 22x14. Re-cut bearing edges, new heads, cleaned up hardware.

This one is going into my personal collection, which is one of a few reasons why i kept the finish as it was. i love the beat-up look this one has.

It’s fun starting a new hobby with ADHD because I never know if I’ve found a new lifelong passion or if I’m going to spend $2000 on stuff and immediately lose all interest

setting up for a much more manageable SDC shootout. I’m A/B-ing a ton of incremental changes to the circuits, the bodies, and the capsules of these MXL 991s. Guessing a lot will be learned from these.

i’ll add more to this thread when i run the experiments.

…i’m going to have to do this mic shootout in multiple parts.

here’s a cool one: got this Gretsch Catalina Club snare awhile back and decided do a silver coating inside like the classic Gretsch drums used to have.

also re-cut bearing edges and snare beds, as usual.

i’ll post more pictures when it’s all back together.

i have a Warm Audio TB-12 ToneBeast on my repair table today. i really love these units because i think they really allow fledgling audio engineers to parse differences between op-amps, transformers, etc.

i’m still trying to figure out why this one has no output, however…

here’s a #feature that i find “refreshing”: if you go to the discovery feed and hit “home” a few times, it will actually refresh with new content. it’s nice because a single tap still just brings you back to the top, a feature that is crucial

a comparison of a few different microphone body damping attempts, grouped from most effective (left) to least (right).

silicone rtv is by far the best option for this application. it’s a shame it’s so ugly in comparison.

see the alt text for more info.

One thing all the futurists are right about—even the nasty ones—is that the next century will determine whether or not we're at the tail end of humanity's rise or in its earliest era.

It will be a period of constant uncertainty and, likely, a lot of suffering.

Get a hobby. Survival is not enough.
Saw someone upbraiding someone else for having a hobby while the world is on fire, and, my friends:

1. The world is ever on fire, this is today's conflagration;

2. If you don't find time for rest and joy the fire will consume you;

3. Don't let people shame you for being an entire human.

taking this back from denver to do some repair work—putting this all the way up my ass to avoid baggage fees was, well, a real pain in the ass. 😳

will post updates about this piece later, along with a couple of other things i’ll be working on.

trying hard to save the ply separation on this 1968 Rogers Holiday kit. this one has really been through the ringer, but it’ll sound really beautiful once it’s had some time put into it.

“i can’t even explain to you how wrong you are about _________ because you wouldn’t get it” is a phrase i’ve been thinking about a lot lately

i don’t know exactly what contributes to this, but you know when a band puts out a few albums and they’re kinda in their “established” phase, and the drum tones are kind of a very established part of the sound? thinking of fall out boy, blink 182, and taking back sunday but it’s kinda this
