Ha, you're right! Don't know how I missed that 🤔 😁

This is confusing. According to this calendar where the 12th is a Wednesday and February has 29 days (so it's a leap year), this would have to be 1964 or 2020.

But the movie's from 1993 - are they using a very old, out-of-date calendar or does it actually play at another time?

"Men Guðs hond er sterk is tight, it’s heavy—though not as heavy as its predecessor, which I missed [...]" - I'm confused, wasn't Támsins Likam your AOTY in 2018?

There you have it! To round it up, some numbers: I listened to 193 albums (probably some more I didn't write down tbh and countless I need to catch up on), went to 40 shows and 5 festivals where I saw 156 gigs in total. Quite the year!

Thanks for reading! Here's the full list:

01. Beth Gibbons – Lives Outgrown

The moment I first heard this album I kinda knew it would take this place. Whenever Beth Gibbons puts her voice on a record it's nothing short of magical. A beautiful album that takes you to another place for 45 minutes on every single listen.

02. The Cure – Songs of a Lost World

To come out with an album like this after a 16-year-long studio pause is just nothing but impressive. Its unmistakebly The Cure, the dreamy production and unparalleled songwriting is somehow out of this world. Easily their best in 30 years.

03. Hamferð – Men Guðs hond er sterk

What a doom metal album. I'm not such a big fan of his other projects but Jón Aldará has just the perfect voice for it. I obviously don't understand Faroese, but I don't need to to kind of feel the tragic of the whaling story this is about.

04. Blood Incantation – Absolute Elsewhere

Just an unstoppable band at this point. Not easy to top the previous record, but then again I didn't expect them to go "what if Pink Floyd was a death metal band?". Just impressive musicianship on display here. Honestly, what's next?

05. Elbow – Audio Vertigo

Guy Garvey still has one of my favourite voices in alt rock. Pretty much classic Elbow, but also much more impressive sounding and a bit more danceable. It's been a while that a new Elbow album hits the sweet spot for me, but this one brings some hits!

06. Shellac – To All Trains

Steve Albini's death was one of the saddest things music had to offer this year, but with this album he went out on a high note. Might even be their best! Man, did he know how to write noise rock bangers (and how to produce). WE COULD BE PIRATES!

07. Chelsea Wolfe – She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She

I always liked Chelsea Wolfe, but this is the first time an album of here truly catches me. A great mix of goth, folk, metal and electro creating a unique sound that's just the perfect vessel for her eerie voice.

08. Knocked Loose – You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To

A record I came back to again and again this year - beyond me how they got this big (there's certainly more approachable metalcore bands) but with breakdowns and a production like this I guess the hype is well-deserved!

09. The Smile – Wall Of Eyes/Cutouts

Can't decide between the two albums and this is my list, so both it is! Wall of Eyes is the better coherent album, while Cutouts has a few more standout tracks - but both are absolutely great follow-ups to an already strong debut.

10. Fontaines D.C. – Romance

Not sure how this happened, but a band that I was ready to write off als "not for me" suddenly release an album that catapults them into stadium indie rock territory and I actually love it? Apparently. But the hype is well deserved if you ask me.

11. Deadletter – Hysterical Strength

I have a thing for saxophones in rock music and this band fulfills this need. Great post-punk-ish indie rock that would work well on its own due to great songwriting, but this instrument just takes the melodies to different levels.
December 20, 2024 at 12:55 PM
12. Nilüfer Yanya – My Method Actor

One of my favourite solo acts these days. Her most mature and effortless sounding album yet - she just gets better with every release and with such a unique indie rock sound I don't understand how she's still somewhat of an insider tip.
December 20, 2024 at 12:54 PM
13. Kim Gordon – The Collective

I skipped her first solo album (my mistake), but for some absolutely random reason I was hooked when I heard her rap a grocery list over a trap beat. It's pretty out there, sounds nothing like Sonic Youth, but I think that's exactly why I like it!
December 20, 2024 at 12:53 PM
14. Leprous – Melodies Of Atonement

They finally brought back the metal! Their past few albums just kinda flew by - even when I liked them, I completely forgot about them very soon. This is exactly what I want from Leprous - catchy, epic and equally hard and melodic prog metal.
December 20, 2024 at 12:52 PM
15. Geordie Greep – The New Sound

No surprise here. While I'm heartbroken Black midi came to a sudden end, this solo album at least partially fills that void. A similar level of craziness and *math*, Greep leans more into rhythm, melodies and catchy tunes, but it clearly works!
December 20, 2024 at 12:51 PM
16. Endonomos – Endonomos II - Enlightenment

Never heard of this band before, but with catchy death/doom riffs like these you got me hooked! I can see myself spinning this album for years, as I just can't get enough of this great mix of melodies, riffs, growls and clean vocals.
December 20, 2024 at 12:50 PM
17. Judas Priest – Invincible Shield

This band is 55(!) years and almost 20 albums old (with quite some duds). I'd expect absolutely nothing from guys in their 70s, but somehow they are on a late-career high, managing to write absolute bangers (if not heavy metal classics).
December 20, 2024 at 12:49 PM
18. Sumac – The Healer

What a beast of an album. The post-metal of their first albums is long gone and the collaborations with Keiji Haino show their influence - this is just extreme avant-garde metal. 4 tracks in 80 minutes, a very challenging listen but not a minute too long.
December 20, 2024 at 12:31 PM
19. Father John Misty – Mahashmashana

I didn't exactly "dislike" his last two albums, but they were just good to okay to me. This feels like a return to form, both musically as well as lyrically. Though the cover really leaves something to be desired if I'm honest.
