This @irishhistsoc.bsky.social article examines the building of grand chapel buildings by Catholics in Ireland after the first Relief Acts, but 30 years before Emancipation. It looks at architectural patronage as civic participation, focusing on Cashel & Waterford www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

NEW: I wrote about British churches installing heat pumps, in some cases in 1,000-year-old buildings! Decarbonisation may not be easy, but many view it as an act of faith.

This is a special feature to mark The Reengineer’s first anniversary! Spread the word! 🥳

A postscript to pro-cathedral 🧵- up to late 1850s, the term cathedral is used (pic 1 - 1859 Ecclesiastical Map of Ireland). From late 1850s, the term ‘pro-cathedral’ is used for St Mary Moorfields in London & the Dublin building. Reflecting change since restoration of the hierarchy? Any thoughts?

So many friends texting me about this! Catholic architecture in the news! Time to update all my slides :)
St Mary's Pro-Cathedral has been designated as Dublin's Catholic cathedral. This comes on the 200th anniversary of the cathedral being built, and on St Lawrence O'Toole's Day - patron saint of Dublin.
