Environmental scientist and wastewater engineer based at Trinity College Dublin, working as advisor and writer on all things to do with the environment. Author of 17 books and numerous research papers, author of 'Facing upto Global Warming'.
Delighted that my latest book 'Anaerobic Wastewater Treatment' has been published by World Scientific. It explores the exciting new range of anaerobic processes that are transforming WWTPs into resource recovery centres. doi.org/10.1142/q0507

I have really enjoyed reading this super new collection of poems from Victoria Melkovska. I really recommend it. I found it heartwarming and personal. A great new talent in Irish poetry. www.dedaluspress.com/authors/melk...

#GreenRoofs are increasingly common in urban areas but given the current combination of heat and water shortages are they always safe? They also require significant structural support. Good for biodiversity not as good as painting a roof white for #emissions and cooling buildings at night

A first for me. We have #swallows in all our outbuildings which is a bit of a problem as they are so messy...hence the cars are covered as they nest above them. This one has been perched on the car aerial for the past month and spends hours watching other swallows in action #birds #conservation

Forgot that I had left this old Easter Cactus in the Polytunnel until it decided to remind me!

Each year I have to cut down the hogweed at the bottom of my percolation area where I have a small willow stand. It's a lovely plant but so invasive producing massive seed heads. Creating a range of habitats requires a lot of management #gardening #conservation #nature

Latest in the new series. Embracing the circular economy concept, #wastewater treatment plants are changing from being solely about pollution control to resource recovery centres, and to achieve this, #anaerobic treatment is key. A new era is beginning with huge benefits doi.org/10.1142/q0507

This farmer has been pouring sludge onto this field for five weeks, it is now over 100mm thick in places...the smell!!! Today he is removing the hedge between the two fields. Some farmers may be guardians of the countryside many are not. #farming #conservation #wicklow @wicklowcoco.bsky.social

I keep coming back to this second collection of poems by #RachelCoventry which are so personal and strong. We are blessed in Ireland with such great emerging female poets that have a unique voice. Really enjoyable, #poetry #books

John Rebus never really ages. Is this the last in the series? Great read. #ianrankin #books

Just finished this Inspector Wexford novel. Bit dated and was confused by the rather hit and miss technique of this rather conflicting detective. #books

Just finished the first in the Wallander series of thrillers. I am rereading these again but I am being to dislike the main character Inspector Wallander...he is certainly a strange mixture of contradictions. A good read although not as rounded as the later ones. #books

I don't know when the flight path was changed, but it is strange to be now woken up at night by the noise of aircraft when you live in rural Ireland. I seem to be at a point where they cross going east-west and north-south. There is always at least one in the sky... contrail at dawn

Just managed to finish Henning Mankell's early Wallander novel before the work week started. Written at the beginning of the 1990's it is fascinating to see how Latvia has changed since then but that how Russia has gone full circle since the break up of the USSR. #Books

Not quite so cold this morning, but this image of a couple of summers ago reminded me that l love all the seasons equally, including the cold ones. Have a great day, be positive about #climateaction and do something every day to reduce your footprint.

You can find my favourite barn in County Antrim in Northern Ireland. I have something similar of my own but all one colour...green. #Reuse #recycle

Back at work yesterday and busy working on #wastewater #surveillance updates. Managed to finish Jane Thynne's 'Midnight in Vienna' which was a good read. I'll be back to reading poetry for the rest of the week as I am able to sneak a few verses between writing and research.

Great structure to this lovely book. I must be getting old when I enjoy the retrospective more than the current. #books

The wonderful thing about holidays is you can indulge in lots of reading. Just reread Audrey Molloy’s collection. She is an exciting Irish poet although has lived for the best part of 20 years in Australia. This new generation of poets brings a vital intimacy to #poetry which I love.
