So the speaker isn't "broken" it's just damaged. The spider support was unglued, and so the voice coil was seriously rubbing. Here I've cut off the dust cap and shimmed the voice coil while I re-glue the spider support. Tune in later to see if surgery is successful...

After a lot of testing... The speaker is busted. Here's a little vid of testing using the functional speaker of its older brother (on top): sounds good for early stages of design! Going to have to think of what to do now... Speakers are expensive...

Ok, so there were two problems. 1) reusing old capacitors from the 1950s in high voltage applications is a bad idea. 2) the output transformer was shorted across the secondary windings! Lucky I have a suitable replacement to hand...

I'm doing another radio conversion! This is another PYE P75A from 1954. This time, I'm hoping to reuse the transformers as well as the speaker and chassis. In fact, I'm also trying to reuse the valve rectifier (EZ41, converting AC to DC) and output valve (EL41).
