Key finding #3: When instructors are occupied, students select instructors through addressing techniques, further orienting to their institutional identities as assistance-providers.

Key finding #2: Students often do not need to address the instructor with their troubles, as instructors will respond with assistance to turns not addressed to anyone or addressed to other students, showing they orient to their identity as instructors and assistance-providers.

Key finding #1: Institutional identities are procedurally relevant for the provision of assistance: students rely on the instructors’ institutional identities and the associated category-bound activity of providing assistance.

We analysed video from UK craft workshops (e.g., pottery, embroidery, dyeing) to examine how students get help. We show that institutional identities shape who provides assistance and how help is mobilised in these workshops.
